Early Learning for Students with Disabilities

As a parent it is your job and responsibility to make sure your child is getting adequate education regardless of their disability. It is importnat to keep students with disabilities engaged at a young age to keep them motivated.

Legislative that Lead to Special Education Today


Legislation for people with disabilities has been developing since the 1960s. With each new law or amendment to existing legislation, the programs for children and adults with disabilities have become more encompassing.


- Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504

"This requires that "no otherwise qualified handicapped individual in the United States shall, solely be reason of his handicap, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of ro be subjected to discrimination under and program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance"
Section 504
1. Has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of such person's major life activities
2. Has a record of such impairments
3. Is regarded as having such an impairments

Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 - 94-142

"All people between the ages of 3 and 18 must be provided with free and appropriate public education (FAPE)"
This means that your child will be placed in the classroom that will benefit the child the most.

Who has a disability... Categories of Disabilities

Autism: This is a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age 3, that adversely affects educational performance
Autism Speaks
Orthopedic Impairment: a severe orthopedic impairment that adversely affects a child's educational performance. Ex. Clubfoot or absence of a limb. An impairment caused by a disease. Ex. Polio or bone tuberculosis. It may also include impairments from other causes, for example cerebral palsy, amputations, or fractures or burns that cause contractures.
Tourette's Syndrome: a neurological disorder that includes repetitive, involuntary movements or ties.
